At a time when April’s about to fold into May and championships are often formed by senior-based teams, second-ranked Buchanan High clearly had its eye on the prize, arrived with a plan, executed it flawlessly and defeated No. 3 Clovis 4-1 Tuesday night in a Tri-River Athletic Conference showdown of leaders.

Winning pitcher Jesse Gonzales had two home runs and three RBIs, and Hanford West edged Lemoore 6-5 by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh in West Yosemite League action. Bullard scored three times in the sixth to beat sixth-ranked Edison 4-1 in the County Metro Athletic Conference. Ryan Cox drove in two runs for the Knights.

It’s difficult to associate overachievement with a baseball program that has won 11 of the past 14 titles at the highest level of competition in the Central Section.But the fact is, Clovis by no means was expected to capture any of the past three Tri-River Athletic Conference championships, yet the Cougars did.
It’s shaping up to be a wild three-team scramble for the Central Section Masters wrestling championship.
