The woman instead contacted deputies, who told her the call was a hoax. The call came from Jamaica and had one of three common area codes used by scammers, spokeswoman Erica Stuart said.
The codes are 809 for the Dominican Republic, 284 for the British Virgin Islands and 876 for Jamaica. The department advises anyone who thinks they may be a target to check the Federal Trade Commission Web site at www.ftccomplaintsassistant.gov or call the FTC toll-free at (877) 382-4357.

Man convicted of sex crimes against relative
A Clovis man was convicted by a Fresno County jury Thursday of charges of sex crimes against a relative under the age of 14.
Rudy Rios, 43, fathered a child with the young girl, who was not identified. Rios was convicted of two of lewd and lascivious acts on a minor and two counts of lewd and lascivious acts with force on a minor.
He was arrested by Clovis police officers two years ago, and has been held in the Fresno County Jail.
Rios will receive credit for time served, but faces 310 years to life in prison when he is sentenced.

Archie Crippen of home demolition company dies
Fresno business owner Archie Charles Crippen died Wednesday. He was 85.
Mr. Crippen operated a family-owned demolition company for 50 years, filling contracts with the city of Fresno and Fresno County.
The company, Archie Crippen Excavation, specialized in home demolition, but gained unwanted attention in 2003 when a fire in a woodpile the size of a football field at the company’s excavation yard on Marks Avenue burned for more than a month and cost more than $2.5 million to extinguish.
Services for Mr. Crippen will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Lisle Calaveras Chapel.
Yosemite Unified names interim superintendent
Yosemite Unified School District in Oakhurst announced Thursday that it has appointed Steve Raupp, a former co-acting superintendent, as interim superintendent. He will become the superintendent July 1.
Raupp replaces Bill McCabe, who resigned in February after the district hired an independent investigator to look into allegations against him. The district has refused to say what those allegations were.
A 2005-06 Madera County Grand Jury report accused McCabe of the “illegal use of school district personnel and the illegal use and sale of school district equipment.” The grand jury said the equipment was a full-size tractor and a self-propelled trencher.
Food Bank gives out healthy items in Madera
The Community Food Bank of Fresno distributed about 90,000 pounds of fresh produce and other healthy staples Thursday at a Neighborhood Market food giveaway at Griffin Hall in Madera.
Several hundred people lined up before the distribution began at 9 a.m., said Community Food Bank spokeswoman Sara Vasquez.
The food bank supplies food to 70,000 people each week and distributes 1 million pounds of food monthly.
