Fresno bull rider hangs up helmet, puts injury in past
Josh Verburg knows better than anyone that a helmet would protect him.But it also reminds him.Three years have passed since the Fresno bull rider got smacked in the mouth by a bull named Red Dragon. The impact knocked his jawbone into his cheekbone, fracturing his cheek and nose. Surgeons needed four plates and 24 screws to hold his face together.
Baxter helps Clovis West to varsity title at swim meet
Clovis West High’s Tristin Baxter has found another gear now that her surgically repaired shoulder is no longer an issue.Baxter swam two All-America times in individual events and helped two relay teams also post All-America marks to lead the host school to the combined varsity title at the Clovis West Invitational swimming and diving meet Saturday at Clovis Olympic Swim Complex.
Rodeo has its last ride for ’09
In the same week that brought near 100-degree temperatures on a couple days followed by 60s with miserable winds and even a few sprinkles on another, the four-day Clovis Rodeo found cooperative weather for the most part, closing with a glorious Sunday, unofficial record attendance and a fascinating mutton bustin’ ride.
Clovis tries to save money
Clovis city officials will soon consider whether to transfer management of the senior services division to the Clovis Memorial District to save money for the city.The plan is being considered as the city deals with a $5.3 million budget shortfall going into the new budget year that begins in July. Such a move would save a maximum of $300,000 annually.
