Workers in Clovis Unified boundaries can register their children in CUSD schools

Over the past year, CUSD has been educating the community about opportunities for those parents and guardians who work within the boundaries of Clovis Unified to send their children to attend Clovis schools. California law allows business owners and their employees to register their children in CUSD if their employment address lies within the 198-square-mile boundary of Clovis Unified.

CUSD’s boundaries extend through the City of Clovis to the City of Fresno to the rural community of Friant to unincorporated areas of Fresno County. To view a map of boundaries, go to www.cusd.com/parents/DistrictMap2008_09.pdf.

To enroll a child in Clovis Unified under the Employment Based Residence Law
(CA Ed Code 48204), parents/guardians are simply asked to present a current paycheck stub or business license to the District’s Student Services and School Attendance (SSSA) Office at 1465 David E. Cook Way, Clovis; 559-327-9200 and fill out an Employment Based Residency Request Form.

It is not necessary to first contact your current school district.

Once an Employment Based Residency Request Form is completed:

  • If applying now, before June 30 the District will inform parents/guardians of the Clovis Unified schools at which there is room for their child to enroll.
  • Once enrollment is authorized, in addition to an approval letter from the SSSA Office, parents/guardians will need the following documents to enroll their student at the new school:
    • Child’s Birth Certificate
    • Child’s Immunization Records
    • PG & E Bill or Renter’s Agreement to establish a home mailing address

Once enrolled in Clovis Unified, parents/guardians must simply present annual proof of employment within the 198-square mile boundary of the District.

Any type of work qualifies as long as it is for pay and includes a 20 hour work week during the school year. As long as an individual remains employed somewhere within the boundaries of Clovis Unified, the child’s enrollment is valid through the twelfth grade.

While some CUSD schools are at enrollment capacity, SSSA staff members work with families to enroll in one of their schools of choice. Secondary students (grades 7-12) who enroll using the Employment Based Residence Law will face some restrictions on athletic eligibility for 365 days. More information about Employment Based Enrollment is available online at www.cusd.com/sssa/enroll.htm. For questions about enrolling a child using a place of work as residence address, contact the Communications Office at 327-9104, or SSSa at 559-327-9200.
