Local briefs: Driver accused of crashing car, leaving kids behind

A Clovis man was arrested Friday night after flipping his car and running away, abandoning three children who were passengers.

Richard Riley, 34, had just picked up his children — two 13-year-olds and a 10-year-old — from a school carnival at Red Bank Elementary School.

Officers said Riley lost control of his car on the 1900 block of Applegate Avenue at around 9 p.m., flipping the Toyota 4-Runner on its side. Police said he ran, leaving the youngsters at the scene.

Witnesses provided a description, and officers saw Riley near Shaw and Temperance avenues. Police said he hopped over fences into backyards, but was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence with injury, hit and run, three counts of child endangerment and for a parole violation.

Two of the children suffered minor cuts and scrapes and were released to family members.

Gang sting leads to 3 arrests in Fresno

A continued crackdown on gang violence resulted in three arrests Friday in southwest Fresno, including a 16-year-old boy wanted in connection with a recent shooting.

Police said the boy, identified as an associate of the Dogpound gang, allegedly had shot up some vehicles and a home when he fired at someone Tuesday.

The boy was arrested on an assault-with-a-deadly-weapon charge after police received a report that he was walking near Calwa and Clara avenues.

That same day, police arrested two West Fresno Norte gang members outside a home on South Eunice Avenue. A 21-year-old was arrested on a felony drug warrant. An 18-year-old was arrested on weapons charges, including being a gang member in possession of a firearm.

Police said the teenager had a loaded sawed-off 22-caliber rifle and two loaded magazines, and a 12-gauge shotgun that he said he kept to deal with rival gangs.

Fresno robbery suspect apprehended

A 21-year-old man with a lengthy criminal history was arrested Saturday in connection with a May 2 robbery and assault near Hughes and Clinton avenues, Fresno police said.

The arrest of Nathaniel Snowden stemmed from the robbery of a 22-year-old man in the parking lot of a liquor store. Officers said the victim was not seriously hurt when his wallet was stolen, but said the suspects were armed and fled in several vehicles.

An investigation identified Snowden as a suspect.

Collision with train kills Fresno man

A 36-year-old Fresno man died early Saturday when his vehicle collided with a train in rural Fresno County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The victim was identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as David Marquez. The accident occurred about 3 a.m. at Chestnut and Mountain View avenues.

Officers said the driver was heading north on Chestnut when he stopped his 2007 Nissan on the railroad tracks. The train couldn’t stop, struck the car and trapped the driver inside. He was dead when officers arrived.
