School spirit alive and well

No one can compete with Clovis Unified’s school spirit.  Even before we moved to Clovis, I had heard about the wonderful support our community gives to our schools, and the strong loyalty our students have for their elementary, intermediate and high schools.  In fact, we’ve intentionally fostered this great school spirit by developing individual identities for our neighborhood schools, and creating strong kindergarten through high school feeder systems.   OK, we’re a little bit competitive, too; and want everyone to know just how great our own school is compared to all others.

This enthusiasm is evident every time you visit one of our schools, and it says something very important about Clovis Unified.  Bottom line, you don’t take pride in your school if you don’t love your school.

If teachers are failing to meet the needs of their students, the campus is poorly maintained, or parents are left out of the equation, you won’t have great school spirit.  It’s that simple.  So the next time you see a sea of students wearing their spirit shirts on game day, or pass by an outrageously decorated football stadium on a Friday night, I hope you appreciate the spirit for what it is: a visible example that Clovis Unified schools are doing things right for our community.

And, because I know that there is little chance that you will have the time or the inclination to visit each of our schools this year, I’d like to invite you to join me in the virtual world as I step into each one of our schools.  Earlier this month a new section of the Clovis Unified web site was launched where I will be posting comments following my visits to each of our elementary, intermediate and high schools.

Thus far, these visits have been awesome!  They’ve shown me just how incredible learning can be when kids and teachers work together; and they’ve created in me excitement about the possibilities available to our students.  So please, join me for a glimpse inside our CUSD classrooms at www.cusd.com/superintendent/.  Talk to you soon!
