Selma’s Alex Cisneros suffered the first loss of his high school career in the 112-pound final at the Walsh Ironman wrestling tournament in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Cisneros, a state champ last season at 103 pounds, won three times against a national-class field before falling 10-4 against Evan Silver of Blair Academy-New Jersey.
Clovis’ Tommy Burriel was third at 189, pinning Stephen McPeek of Bishop Lynch-Texas in 59 seconds. Selma’s Nick Pena (135) was fourth, losing to Jordan Rich of Central Mountain-Pa. 4-2.
Clovis’ Alex Dieter (135) was seventh with a pin in 3:20 over Mingus-Ariz.’s Luke Goettle, and teammates Clinton McAlester (140) and Zach Nevills (171) placed eighth.
– Even with seven wrestlers at the Ironman, Clovis won the Clovis West Shootout with a 6-0 record against Vacaville, Gilroy, Bella Vista-Fair Oaks, El Dorado-Placentia, Ventura and Laguna Hills. Vacaville (5-2) was the away-team winner of the dual-meet event.
Rams wrestlers win titles
Fresno City College’s Chris Urquizo and Fernando Lucatero won titles at the California Community College Wrestling Championships on Saturday in Hayward.
Urquizo defeated Shasta’s Tim Navarette 6-4 at 157 pounds, while Lucatero edged Sacramento City’s Joe Garner 5-4 at 165.
Santa Ana (158.50) won the title, Sierra (122) was second and 2008 champ Fresno City (115) third.
The Rams’ other finalist, 285-pounder Austin Garza, lost 5-2 against Cerritos’ Jose Lopez.
Other medalists for Fresno City included Galen Williams (third at 125), Dan Osmer (third, 133), Joe Cisneros (fifth, 174), Justin Walker (fifth, 184) and Lucas Keene (seventh, 197). A.J. Jaramillo (125) of West Hills-Lemoore was sixth.
Fresno City men are champs
The Fresno City College men’s basketball team won the Modesto Tournament for the third straight year behind MVP LaBrent Chappell’s 16 points.
Jibreel Nasir and Edward Willis each had 11 points for the Rams.
It was the fourth straight title in Modesto for Rams coach Ed Modec, who also won the tournament while at Siskiyous.
FCC women place second
Fresno City failed to protect a seven-point lead over the final 4 minutes in losing 77-73 to Fullerton in the final of the Rams’ women’s basketball tournament.
MVP Taiyande Huskey had 19 points for Fullerton, while Sumiya Darden had 23 for Fresno City.
– Reedley’s men fell 68-38 to Cabrillo at the Skyline Classic.
Clovis West boys get 7th
Derek Walters’ rebound and free throw with 4.6 seconds left helped Clovis West High’s boys basketball team hang on for a 63-61 victory over Leuzinger-Los Angeles for seventh place at the Oceanview Tournament of Champions in Huntington Beach.
The Golden Eagles were led by Jason Ritchey’s 29 points.
– Sierra downed Caruthers 74-62 for the Kerman title behind MVP Brandon Bill’s 21 points.
– MVP Chris Jenkins scored 18 points to lead Sunnyside past Clovis North 67-65 for the Kingsburg Lions title.
Yosemite is Hoover tourney champ
Yosemite High’s girls basketball team pulled away from Clovis East in the fourth quarter behind tournament MVP Sydnee Fipps for a 53-48 win in the final of the Hoover Holiday Classic.
Fipps scored 32 points for the Badgers. All-tourney pick Erikka Banks had 25 for Clovis East.
– MVP Toni Anaya’s 11 points helped Memorial defeat Reedley 59-19 and win the Reedley Kiwanis title. Memorial went 3-1 — as did Hanford West and Tulare Western — but allowed the least points.
Kingsburg takes soccer title
Kingsburg High boys soccer player Andres Saldaña was named Fowler Tournament MVP after contributing a goal and an assist in the Vikings’ 3-0 victory over Chowchilla in the final.
– Buchanan, Madera and Liberty-Madera Ranchos won division championships at the Peggy Renberg girls tournament. Buchanan captured the D-I title, 2-1 over Bullard. Madera beat Madera South 2-1 in D-II and Liberty downed Golden West 4-0 in D-III.
L.A. Kings tie for West lead
LOS ANGELES — Michal Handzus scored the decider in the fourth round of a shootout and the Los Angeles Kings tied for first in the Western Conference with a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.
Los Angeles, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 2002, shares the top spot with San Jose. The Kings are 7-0-1 in their past eight games.
– Jonas Hiller stopped 35 shots as Anaheim won 3-1 at Columbus.
– Phoenix beat visiting San Jose 2-1, extending the Sharks’ season-worst losing streak to five.
