Buchanan girls win soccer championship
Buchanan High, the defending Central Section Division I champion, completed a dominating run Saturday through the girls Elite Division of the Garces Holiday Soccer Festival.
The Bears, ranked No. 1 in the section, overwhelmed No. 2 Stockdale 8-0 for the title and outscored opponents 15-0 in their three matches. Elise Krieghoff hit the hat trick in the title match.
Second-ranked Golden Valley beat No. 5 Tulare Western 1-0 for the boys Elite title.
Other champs: Wasco, boys Premier Division; Arroyo Grande, girls Premier; Farmersville, boys Gold; Righetti-Santa Maria, girls Gold; Mission Prep, boys Silver; and Mammoth Lakes, girls Silver.
Sierra wins soccer crown
Sierra beat Mendota 1-0 for the Mendota girls soccer tournament championship and placed Morgan Lowe, Ashton Richards and Hollie Huebner on the all-tournament team.
Mendota’s Gabby Maravilla was named MVP.
Kerman boys are champs
Kerman clipped Mendota 1-0 for the boys soccer tournament title, as the Lions’ Manuel Garcia earned MVP honors and teammates Alfonso Solorio and Oscar Venturo made the all-tournament team.
Clovis pins down Zinkin
Clovis High, with five wrestlers in finals, won the Zinkin Classic at Buchanan High, 59 points ahead of runner-up Bakersfield.
Jonas Gaytan (103 pounds), Daniel Gaytan (112) and Tommy Burriel (189) were the Cougars’ individual champs. Others: Clovis North’s Vince Rodriguez (125) and Devin Poindexter (145); Spencer Hill (135), Matt Negrete (160) and Kyle Papendorf (285) led third-place Buchanan.
