Local events for the week of Nov. 26-Dec. 2

Right on the Money

8 p.m. Thursday / Tower Theatre, 815 E. Olive Ave. / $35-$50 / (559) 485-9050

When you think of Eddie Money, you think of rock anthems like “Two Tickets to Paradise” and “Shakin’.” You don’t necessarily think of an acoustic Christmas show like the one he’s doing in Fresno on Thursday night.

Fear not, Money loyalists, he’ll play his hits, too. But expect some holiday treats.

Opening the show is Groove Monkey, a local band featuring Astrid Plane from Animotion.

You’ve been Zapped

6 p.m. Saturday / Crossroads, 3315 N. Cedar Ave. / $20 / crossroadsfresno.com, (559) 389-0770

Legendary funk/soul band Zapp is at Crossroads on Saturday night, the centerpiece of the club’s holiday concert series.

Zapp is best known for early ’80s hits such as “More Bounce to the Ounce” and “Computer Love.”

Many people associate Zapp with once-frontman Roger Troutman, who died in 1999. His brothers Lester and Terry Troutman remain with the group today.

Keyboard series continues

3 p.m. Sunday / The Concert Hall at California State University, Fresno / $5-$18 / (559) 278-2337

The latest in the Philip Lorenz Memorial keyboard concert series is Sunday, with an appearance by Stephen Kovacevich.

Kovacevich has a long and distinguished career, playing for decades and winning awards such as the Diapason d’Or and multiple Gramaphone Awards, including a 2009 Editor’s Choice award.

Tickets cost $18, or $12 for seniors and $5 for students.

It’s beginning to look like Christmas

7 p.m. Monday. / Main Street from Santa Fe Avenue and Conyer Street, Visalia / free / (559) 732-7737

The 65th annual Candy Cane Lane Parade takes over the streets of Visalia with more than 110 entries, making this one of the largest and longest-running night-time parades in the Valley.

This year’s theme is “A Mariachi Christmas” and honors Grand Marshal Gilberto Cortes, owner of a Mexican restaurant in Visalia.

All aboard!

10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday through Dec. 19 / 6943 S. Reed Ave., Reedley / Free admission, $3 train rides ages 2 and older / (559) 638-2762, hillcrestreedley.com

Hillcrest and Wahtoke Railroad begins operating for the Christmas season this weekend and features half-scale custom-built railroad steam locomotives and cars. Train rides run every 15 minutes during the weekend.

In addition to train rides, search for the perfect Christmas tree to chop down and take home. The tree farm is open daily.

ArtHop don’t stop

5-8 p.m. Thursday / Various locations around downtown and the Tower District / Free / fresnoarthop.org

The calendar flips next week, which means Thursday is the first Thursday of the month. You know what that means — ArtHop, Fresno’s bi-monthly celebration of local art and galleries.

It’s the downtown/Tower District ArtHop, providing plenty of gallery options. Check fresnoarthop.org for a rundown of all the participants.

One that caught our eye: A concert photography exhibit by Danny Ayers at City Hall.

Take Fido to meet Santa

5-8 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and Dec. 6-7 / Sierra Vista Mall, 1050 Shaw Ave. / $15 / (559) 299-0660

Looking for a chance to help your furry little friends during the holiday season? Bring your pets to the mall for pet photos with Santa Clause. Proceeds benefit the Clovis Pet Adoption Center to help homeless cats and dogs find homes, and toward a new facility.

Pet photo packages begin at $15.

The Sacred Circus

6 p.m. today and noon Saturday / Tulare Fairgrounds, 215 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. / Free / thesacredcircus.com

This weekend’s Sacred Circus in Tulare is a tattoo convention taken to the extreme.

There’s MMA matches, beer pong, oil wrestling and more than a dozen local bands performing.

Among the artists on the music lineup: Six Ounce Gloves, Say Swear, Cole Fonseca, The Capital is Burning and Dislodic.

The event is put on by fight promoter Christian Printup and tattoo artist Steve Easley of Sacred Tiki Tattoo in Visalia.

The best part? Admission is free. The event will, however, be collecting toys and blankets to benefit families in Tulare County.

Uber Fest

2 p.m. Saturday / The Skate Asylum, 630 H St. / $5 / myspace.com/travisnolemp3

A dozen local hard-rocking bands are competing in Saturday’s Uber Fest, a battle of the bands where the crowd crowns a winner.

Playing are bands such as Your Hero is a Villain, Disarm the Tyrant, Obsidian Seraph, PlasticBag FaceMask and At the Hands of an Architect.

It’s an all-ages event, held at The Skate Asylum, which is the home of the roller derby league Central California Area Derby.

There’s a cash prize for the winner.
