Sports briefs: Visalia crowns junior golf champs

Lemoore’s Jordan Koelewyn held on for a one-stroke victory and Hanford’s Kayla Luis coasted to a four-shot win as the two players captured the top boys and girls age divisions Tuesday at the Visalia City Junior Open at Valley Oaks.

Koelewyn followed up his first-round 70 on Monday with a final-round 72 to finish at 2-under 142, edging Clovis’ Trevor Clayton (72-71–143) in the boys 16-17 bracket.

Luis had rounds of 75 and 76 to finish at 6-over 151 in girls 15-17. Visalia’s Christina Trujillo (79-76–155) was next.

Other boys winners included Visalia’s Giuseppe Scalia (7-9), Fresno’s Brian Stark (10-11), Exeter’s Drake Jones (12-13) and Clovis’ Sean Duckering (14-15).

In the girls divisions, winners included Visalia’s Rylee Santiago (7-9), Fresno’s Lillian Torres (10-11) and Friant’s Jacqueleine Ngo (12-14).

The 7-9 and 10-11 divisions all played 18 holes; the others played 36.

Sanger girls win NSA West series

The Sanger Stars under-16 team won the NSA girls fast-pitch Western World Series last weekend in Sacramento.

Sanger was sent to the losers bracket by the California Hot Shots but rebounded with an elimination-game victory against the Gilroy Chaos. The Stars then defeated Hot Shots in back-to-back games, 10-6 and 7-6. The Stars are coached by Joaquin Leon, Randy Corrales, Joe Morales and Irene Mendoza.

Ex-Fresnan to enter tennis hall

Ex-Fresnan George Sarantos, a 2005 Fresno Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, today will join the Southern California Tennis Association Senior Hall of Fame during the Farmers Tennis Classic at UCLA’s Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Sarantos, now of Rancho Mirage, also is one of four tennis players who will represent the U.S. on the Jack Crawford Cup team in the world championship tournament in October in Antalya, Turkey. It is is the third time he has been selected to play on a World Cup team.

Earlier this summer, Sarantos and Henry Leicthtfried of Laguna Woods won the National 70 Hardcourt United States Tennis Championships. They beat Rudy Hernando and Don Biedinger, both of Florida, 6-2, 6-1 in the June final in Irvine.

River Park pulls out NorCal victory

James Bell had a walk-off single in the bottom of the sixth to score Tresten Bumatay as the River Park 11-year-old All-Stars beat Tri City-Rockin 2-1 at the NorCal Little League Tournament in Folsom.

River Park, 3-1 in the tournament, will play in the semifinals Thursday.

Firebaugh falls at Ripken regional

Firebaugh’s 10-year-old all-stars suffered a second straight loss and were eliminated from the Cal Ripken League Pacific Southwest Regional in Bakersfield.

After a 7-6 loss to Northern Utah on Monday, Firebaugh lost 6-0 to Northern California. Firebaugh placed second in the state tourney earlier this month.
