Bulldogs briefs: Fresno State to host soccer tourney; 6 earn All-WAC honors
Fresno State will host the Western Athletic Conference women’s soccer tournament beginning today, in the Bulldogs’ final WAC season.
Top-seeded Utah State and No. 2 Fresno State received opening-day byes. Today at Bulldog Stadium, No. 4 San Jose State faces No. 5 Idaho at noon and third-seeded Hawaii faces No. 6 New Mexico State at 2:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs, with four first-team All-WAC players, get the Hawaii-New Mexico State winner at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
On Thursday, senior defender and three-year captain Kendall VanDine, senior midfielder Molly Nizzoli, junior striker Callie Hancock, the team’s leader in goals with 11, and sophomore defender Lauren Lindstrom were named to the All-WAC first team.
Senior striker Laura Dodd (Clovis) and junior midfielder Vanessa Gonzalez (Clovis) were second-team picks.
Patel places 12th, Bulldogs 11th at Pacific golf invite
Fresno State’s Bhavik Patel shot a final-round 71 and tied for 12th at the University of the Pacific Invitational in Stockton.
The Bulldogs shot par 284 as a team to finish 11th at 37-over 889 at Brookside Country Club. Patel finished with a 3-over total of 216 and teammate Rufie Fessler closed with a 67 – the second-best round of the day – to tie for 25th at 219.
Oregon State won the team title over Nevada in a one-hole playoff after both tied at 855. Kevin Lucas of Nevada took home the individual title with a birdie on the 18th to win by one stroke at 6-under 207.
