Sports briefs: Clovis High wrestlers win at Temecula Valley

Clovis High won three individual titles and had six finalists overall in winning the team championship Saturday at the Temecula Valley Invitational wrestling tournament.

Jonas Gaytan (120 pounds), Daniel Gaytan (126) and Nick Nevills (285) won belts at their respective weights as Clovis totaled 272.5 points. Poway had 203, Bakersfield 150.5 and Lemoore 129 to round out the top four in the 70-team field.

Lemoore’s Isaiah Martinez, with four falls and two technical falls in winning at 152, captured the Champion of Champions award.

• Kingsburg’s Javier Gasca III (132) had three falls, one technical fall and one major decision in winning the Lower Weight MVP at the Five Counties Tournament in Fountain Valley. Porterville’s Mason Pengilly (113) and Selma’s Alex Cisneros (138) also won titles. Selma was fifth and Porterville eighth in a 79-team field.

Sunbirds men fall, women win in hoops

Fresno Pacific missed its final five shots and lost to last-place San Diego Christian 61-55 in a Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball game.

The Sunbirds (11-6, 2-4), who fell out of the NAIA Top 25 this week, pulled within 57-55 with 3:37 left, then went cold as the host Hawks (5-8, 1-5) clinched it with four free throws.

Donte Nicholas led Fresno Pacific with 25 points and seven rebounds.

• Brandi Blackwell’s 21 points and nine rebounds lifted the Fresno Pacific women’s team past San Diego Christian 75-73. Keairra White made three 3-pointers and scored 12 points, including the Sunbirds’ final three baskets to help her team snap a three-game losing streak.

Breana Buczek handed out a career-high 11 assists for the Sunbirds (11-7, 3-3), who shot 56.6%. The Hawks (13-5, 2-4) were led by Brittany Daniel’s 26 points and 10 rebounds.

Rams women top 100 in rout of Sequoias

Fresno City College justified its No. 9 women’s state basketball ranking with a 110-41 blowout of visiting Sequoias.

The Rams (17-5, 2-0 Central Valley Conference) cruised behind 15-of-30 shooting from 3-point range. Taryn Sayama made 7 of 9 3s and scored 29 points. Tabitha Torres added 20 points against the Giants (4-13, 0-2).

• Ashlyn White’s two free throws with 11 seconds left secured Reedley’s 72-70 victory against visiting Taft and a 2-0 start to the CVC season. Michelle Anaya and Jessica Martin both scored 19 points for the Tigers (9-9), and Jazmine Waiters posted a triple-double with 11 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists against the Cougars (11-9, 0-2).

COS men triumph

Marte Sears contributed 11 points and nine rebounds in his first start of the season and Bill Borekambi scored a game-high 17 points as Sequoias defeated Porterville 60-47 in CVC men’s basketball play.

Borekambi also had 12 rebounds. The Giants led 31-17 at halftime.

• Reedley’s John Hedrington led all scorers with 21 points in a 74-59 victory over Merced.

Coffman leads FPU tri-meet swim sweep

All-American Cheyenne Coffman continued to rule the pool for NAIA No. 1 Fresno Pacific, as both Sunbirds swimming and diving teams swept California Baptist and Concordia at Sunnyside High.

Coffman won her three events — 100-yard back, 50 freestyle and 100 free — to help the women beat Cal Baptist 156-140 and Concordia 186-101. The third-ranked men downed Cal Baptist 155-133 and No. 5 Concordia 160-133.50

Other Sunbirds women’s winners: Kendall Swanson (100 breaststroke, 200 individual medley); Lauren Malthaner (200 breast); and the 200 medley and 400 free relays.

Winners for the men included Bobby Yribarren (500 and 1,000 free); Jordan Litz (200 breast, 200 IM); Paul Marie-Rose (200 free); Guy Kosov (100 back); Marko Tanasovski (50 free); Damien Bernard (100 fly); and the 200 medley relay.

Monsters win twice

The Fresno Monsters finally solved the Alaska Avalanche, beating their North American Hockey League rival for the first time in seven tries this season in a 5-2 win Saturday.

Five players scored for the Monsters, who had a 3-0 lead after two periods.

• Rob Kolander scored twice and had three assists and the Monsters’ Western States Hockey League team won its 30th game with a 9-3 dismantling of Long Beach. The Monsters are a league-best 30-2-1.
