Valley sports briefs: Ashford leads Sunbirds to baseball victory

Wilson Ashford, a freshman left-hander from Clovis North, gave up two runs in seven innings, struck out five, didn’t walk a batter and threw 64 of 96 pitches for strikes as Fresno Pacific defeated Cal State Stanislaus 9-2 in a nonleague baseball game.

Senior shortstop Alec Mehrten (Madera) had two hits and three RBIs for the Sunbirds (9-2), who won their sixth straight.

Kingsburg wrestler wins gold in regional

Kingsburg’s top-seeded Marina Doi led Central Section representation by capturing the 98-pound title in the CIF Southern California Regionals. And the Vikings’ Regina Doi placed second at 103.

Porterville, with 70 points for 16th place, was the section’s leading team, receiving a second from Rayna Pina (165), a third from Natalee Ozuna (154) and a fifth from Sabrina Sandoval (103). Selma’s Amber Quintana placed third (114).

Clovis High rugby wins

Tevin Hayes, Colton Campbell, Joseph Coursey and Joey Moncivais each scored a try as Clovis High posted a 24-10 victory against Clovis West in a NorCal Varsity Silver Division match on Friday at Todd Beamer Park.

The victory puts Clovis at 1-0-1. Clovis West is 1-1.

Buchanan improved to 2-0 with a 52-0 win against San Luis Obispo (0-2), and Bullard (1-0-1) forged a 24-22 victory over Roosevelt (0-2).
