Sports briefs: Tight duels emerge at City Amateur tourney
Steve Donnelly (Masters), David Smith and Mike Watney (Seniors) and Morgan Thomas (Ladies) led their respective divisions after Saturday’s first round of the opening weekend of the Fresno City Amateur golf tournament at Riverside Golf Course.
Donnelly shot a 73 to lead Darren Segrue, Mike Stieler and Tal Tartaglia by a stroke. Smith and Watney shot 72s. Thomas (72) had a one-shot lead on Holly Bare in gross scoring and her 70 was two better than Camille Orito in net scoring.
Robert Stroud (69); Rusty Riley and Thomas Dewey (67); and Dewayne Brawley (67) led the three handicap flights.
The final round is today. The 54-hole Championship flight begins next Saturday.
COS runner takes second at state meet
College of Sequoias 800-meter runner Bailey Henshaw was second in the 800-meter run at the state community college track and field meet, while teammate Melissa Leyva placed in the top six in two events at Cerritos College.
Leyva took fifth in the 400 and sixth in the long jump.
Fresno City’s Vernon Sampson was second in the men’s triple jump and Raquel Rochon seventh in the women’s 400.
Ex-Clovis East golfer ties for 25th in NAIA
Point Loma Nazarene’s Andrea Mersino (Clovis East High) tied for 25th at the NAIA Golf Championships in Greeneville, Tenn.
The freshman rallied after opening with an 81, shooting 75 and 77 to qualify for Friday’s finale that was limited to the top 40 golfers, then posted a 77 for an 18-over total of 310.
Alyssa Orito (Clovis West, 87-80-80) missed the cut for Point Loma, a first-year team that placed 20th.
Aleman youth boxer reaches tourney final
Aleman Boxing Fresno’s Daniel Perez, a 13-year-old seventh-grader at Sequoia Middle School, advanced to the finals of the Adidas National Boxing Tournament in Oxnard. Perez is fighting in the novice 114-pound division for 13-14-year-olds.
Fresno PAL’s Isidro Ochoa and Marc Castro also will fight for titles. Aspen Bandaphone (11-12, 70 pounds) lost a semifinal.
