Buchanan High boys volleyball team earns SoCal Regional home match

The Buchanan High boys volleyball team (36-5), coming off a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Clovis West for the section championship, landed a third seed and a home match against No. 6 Warren-Downey (29-4) Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Southern California Division I Regional.

The Bears return five starters, featuring setter Jon Ferrari, outside hitter Tim Moses and libero Aaron Samarin, from a 39-3 team that closed the 2011 season with 32 straight victories and a 3-2 victory over Otay Ranch-Chula Vista for their first SoCal Regional title. They were down 0-2 in that one, as they were Friday against Clovis West.

Otay Ranch (38-2) is top-seeded this season. Buchanan, with a win, will play on Thursday against the winner of No. 2 Loyola-Los Angeles (33-2) and No. 7 Poway (23-12). The highest seed standing will host Thursday’s semifinal.

The D-I championship will be Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Irvine Valley College in Irvine.
