Sports briefs: Fresno teen boxers capture Jr. Olympic Nationals titles
Fresno teenagers Isidro Ochoa and Efren Lopez won their respective weight-class titles Friday at the USA Boxing Junior Olympic Nationals in Mobile, Ala.
Ochoa, 15, scored a 7-5 decision against Shakur Stevenson of New Jersey in the 110-pound division.
Lopez, 16, defeated Rogelio Cervantes of Kansas City with a three-round decision in the 119-pound class.
The boxers earned the chance to represent the United States in an international tournament in July in Russia.
Bears duo aids County victory in volleyball match
Buchanan High stars Ben Harding and Tim Moses teamed up one more time for a victory, leading the County to a 3-0 sweep in the annual City/County All-Star Volleyball Game.
Harding had 10 kills and 51/2 blocks and Moses notched seven kills, three blocks and an ace in the 25-19, 25-23, 25-23 victory at Fresno State. The two helped Buchanan win a Central Section championship during the school year.
Clovis West’s Sean MeEowen led the City with six kills, and teammates Sam Gooden and Brian Ying of Clovis North each added five.
Fresno County Amateur golf tourney opens today
The Fresno County Amateur Golf Championships begin with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. today at the Belmont Country Club.
The two-day tournament will crown a new winner this year, with last year’s champion Bryson DeChambeau unable to defend his title, as he will focus his attention on the California State Amateur, beginning Monday.
Ex-Bulldogs star Wright back in Arena League
Former Fresno State standout Rodney Wright is rejoining the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League.
Wright, the Bulldogs’ career receptions leader, has bounced between NFL practice squads and the AFL since he was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL draft.
This is Wright’s fifth season and third stint with San Jose.
Heat to host Storm in elite women’s soccer match
The Central California Heat will host the California Storm in a Women’s Premier Soccer League match at 6 p.m. today at Fresno City College.
The Heat (2-2) has a chance to gain ground in the WPSL’s Pacific North Division and hand the first-place Storm (3-0-1) its first loss. The Storm’s roster includes former U.S. national team star Brandi Chastain.
Ashley Sherr, formerly of Fresno Pacific and Fresno Christian High, leads the Heat with three goals on the season.
