Local sports briefs: Monsters seeking host families
The Fresno Monsters are seeking families in the Fresno/Clovis area to host players for the upcoming season.
Roughly 50 players ages 15 to 20 will be coming into Fresno to play for the Monsters’ North American Hockey League team and Western States Hockey League team. The players recruited will need to be hosted from the end of August through the end of the season in April or May.
Host families will receive a $300-per- month stipend and two season tickets. Details: fresnomonsters.com.
Caviglia’s slam powers River Park
Nick Caviglia hit a grand slam to lead the River Park 12-year-old Little League All-Stars over Visalia 13-3 for the Section 7 title, completing a comeback through the loser’s bracket Wednesday in Selma.
River Park advances to the state championships in Fremont, where it will compete for a spot in the Western Regional Championships in San Bernardino. River Park opens against Pajara Valley.
The team is Caviglia, Treston Bumatay, Isaiah Haddad, Adrian Martinez, Ian Oehlschlaeger, Josh Pletz, Chase Prieto, Evan Rocha, Hayden Sanders, DJ Schramm, Dusty Schramm and Kohl Simas.
- Wayne Rutledge had four hits and three RBIs to power the River Park 10-11-year-old All-Stars past Visalia National 9-3 on Tuesday during the Little League Section 7 tournament in Exeter.
Robert Bernal pitched three scoreless innings, striking out five, for River Park.
Reedley wins district tournament
Reedley’s 9-10-year-old Little League All-Stars won the District 7 tournament Tuesday in Lemoore, earning a spot in the Northern State Championships for the first time.
Reedley opens at 4 p.m. Saturday against an opponent to be determined in Rancho Murrieta.
Buchanan All-Stars reach regional
The Buchanan 9-under All-Stars finished second at the Cal Ripken Central California Section tournament Sunday and earned a spot in the Cal Ripken Pacific Southwest Regional tournament in Long Beach from July 23-28.
The team: Ben Blanchette, Cason Brownell, Braeden Cobb, Kaleb Coffin, Sky Collins, Orin Hirschkorn, Ryan O’Hara, Ethan Royal, Eddie Saldivar, Stephen Shelley, Sam Willis and Sam Young. Manager: Jay Cobb. Coaches: Dan O’Hara and Eddie Saldivar.
Tulare basketball league set
An eight-game skills development fall league for boys and girls basketball teams between the fourth grade and high school is set for Tulare’s Mission Oaks High.
Cost is $300 per team with games played on Sundays, starting Sept. 2.
