Fresno is hot, and about to get hotter

Dillon Taylor rests on Friant Avenue across from Woodward Park waiting to be picked up after the truck he was driving for Sparky Electronics Inc. broke down holding up traffic Thursday.

Fresno endured a scorcher Thursday and can expect even hotter temperatures today and this weekend, the National Weather Service said.

Following a streak of high temperatures just above the century mark, Fresno’s high on Thursday jumped to 107 — nine degrees above normal for this time of year, the weather service said.

Don’t expect relief in the near future, weather service meteorologist Gary Sanger said. The sweltering temperatures will peak this weekend with a forecast high of 110 today and Saturday. Today’s temperature could tie a record set in 1898.

Sunday will mark the start of a slight cooling trend as highs drop back to 108 degrees and to 106 degrees Monday, he said. Relief from the heat likely won’t come until Wednesday, when high temperatures will drop to the mid- to high 90s.

Fresnans looking to get out of the heat can head to any of the city’s cooling centers, located at Frank H. Ball, Ted C. Wills, Mosqueda and Pinedale community centers. The centers, which open on days when the forecast high is 105 or higher, will open at noon and close at 8 p.m.
