Sports briefs: Fresno State 2-1 at volleyball tournament

Korrin Wild help Fresno State’s volleyball team salvage a split of its final two matches at the El Paso Sports Commission Invite, pounding 15 kills with a .458 hitting percentage as the Bulldogs swept Idaho State 25-20, 25-14, 25-21.

The Bulldogs, who went 2-1 at the season-opening tournament in New Mexico, also received 10 kills each from Megan Callahan and Marissa Brand. Barbara Alcantara had 40 assists and Christina Lee made 10 digs.

Fresno State fell 25-22, 25-11, 25-19 to Arizona State in its first match Saturday, getting 10 kills from Brand and eight from Wild.

Clovis West’s Wright takes bronze at Pan Pacific meet

Fresno’s Justin Wright earned a bronze medal in the 200-meter butterfly for the U.S. this week at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in Oahu, Hawaii.

Wright, a junior at Clovis West High, swam a 1:59.48 Thursday, finishing behind Japan’s Kenta Hirai (1:57.40) and U.S. teammate Corey Okubo (1:58.58) in the competition for swimmers 18 and younger.

Wright swam the 100 fly on Saturday, finishing 21st during the preliminaries in 57.23.
