Local briefs: Help sought to find family of train victim
The Fresno County Coroner’s Office is trying to locate the family of a man struck and killed by an Amtrak train in downtown Fresno on Tuesday afternoon.
The man, Rogelio Cruz, 46, of Fresno, was killed about 12:30 p.m., just south of Fresno Street near Fresno City Hall.
Anyone with information on Cruz’s family is asked to call the Coroner’s Office at (559) 600-3400.
Man arrested in child porn case kills self
A retired Fresno firefighter who was arrested this week on suspicion of possessing and distributing child pornography apparently committed suicide, authorities said.
Dan Allen Craft, 70, was arrested at his home east of Clovis Monday by the Fresno County sheriff’s cyber crimes task force.
He bailed out of Fresno County Jail on Monday afternoon.
On Wednesday, county Emergency Medical Services officials were called to the home in the 6800 block of McCall Avenue regarding a possible suicide.
The Fresno County Coroner’s Office confirmed that it is investigating Craft’s death as a possible suicide. No other details were available Wednesday.
Police arrest man after 2-hour standoff
Fresno police arrested a 29-year-old man on the roof of a central Fresno apartment Wednesday evening after a two-hour standoff, Lt. Michael Doyle said.
The Fresno man was wanted on suspicion of kidnapping, robbery, domestic violence and making terrorist threats, Doyle said. Fresno police found him at an apartment near University and Channing avenues, but he refused to surrender.
The standoff, which began about 4:30 p.m., prompted a limited lockdown of nearby Fremont Elementary School and the evacuation of nearby apartments, Doyle said.
After two hours, police arrested the man on the roof of his apartment without incident. The man was thought to be armed, but no weapons were found inside.
Visalia ex-teacher’s sentencing delayed
Lianne Marie Trout, a former special education teacher at Visalia’s Mt. Whitney High who pleaded no contest to sex with a minor, did not appear in court Wednesday for sentencing.
Trout, 27, is on doctor- ordered bed rest due to complications from pregnancy, lawyer Jeff Hammerschmidt said.
The father is Trout’s husband, he said.
Tulare County Superior Court Judge Gary Paden set a new sentencing date of Nov. 9.
Visalia police arrested Trout Dec. 15, 2011, and said she had an affair with a 16-year-old student at the school.
