Local sports briefs: No. 25 Sunbirds sweep Chaminade
Fresno Pacific, after a grueling exhibition a night earlier, found the going easier when play resumed for real.
The Sunbirds swept visiting Chaminade in a PacWest Conference volleyball match Wednesday night, winning 25-13, 25-23, 25-20 for their 11th straight victory.
Lyndsie Petersen had nine kills as the NCAA Division II No. 25-ranked Sunbirds rested star outside hitter Rupia Inck and others after Tuesday’s five-set exhibition loss at Fresno State.
Fresno Pacific is 12-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Chaminade is 4-8 and 1-3.
‘Dogs baseball recruits rank highly
Fresno State’s baseball recruiting class was ranked No. 20 by Collegiate Baseball, which unveiled its annual evaluation of incoming D-I talent this week.
The Bulldogs head to the Mountain West this season after seven straight Western Athletic Conference titles.
Fresno State women’s hoops team seeking male practice players
Fresno State women’s basketball coach Raegan Pebley is looking for male basketball players to practice with her team on a regular basis, beginning Sunday.
“We utilize the male practice squad to replicate what we will see offensively and defensively from our opponents, as we prepare for games,” the first-year coach said. “We need these guys to be competitive, skilled and have a great understanding of what it means to be a Bulldog.”
All players must meet NCAA qualifications. High school experience is preferred.

Walberg to lead basketball clinic
Vance Walberg, who once led powerhouse Clovis West High and Fresno City College basketball programs, will return to the area to conduct a coaches clinic Saturday at Clovis North High.
The clinic, open to male and female coaches from all levels, is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fresno City College wrestling, volleyball teams post victories
Defending 157-pound state champ Brady Bersano won his match 13-1 and two-time defending state team champion Fresno City beat Cuesta 34-10 in a nonconference wrestling dual match in San Luis Obispo.
Will Gockel-Figge (187) and Paul Lujano (197) scored pins for the Rams.
- State fourth-ranked and NorCal No. 1 Fresno City beat Taft 3-2 in a Central Valley Conference volleyball match. Toni Murphy had 16 kills for the Rams (11-1, 2-0) in a 15-25, 25-11, 25-19, 20-25, 15-6 win. Taft, 24th in the state, No. 9 in NorCal, is 8-4 and 1-1.
