“Lock It Up-Clean It Out-Drop It Off” Taking Back Unwanted Prescription Drugs

Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims was joined by Clovis Police Chief Janet Davis, Fresno County Lt. Rick Ko, Fresno State Lt. James Watson, Fresno County Supervisor Susan Anderson, and Clovis Mayor Pro Tem Lynne Ashbeck at the Clovis Police Department, to announce the first-year results of the prescription drug disposal program, Lock it Up, Clean it Out, Drop it Off. A total of 1569.56 pounds of pills have been collected at seven secure drop-off box locations throughout Fresno County.
The fastest growing drug problem among American teenagers is prescription painkiller abuse and Fresno County is no exception.
Fresno’s Lock it Up Project is a partnership with the California Health Collaborative, and works closely with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, the Fresno State Police Department, Clovis Police Department, and rural police departments to provide a safe, secure location for unneeded unwanted prescription drugs to be dropped off.
Sheriff Mims was pleased with the results and emphasized, “Today’s results show we are making progress. Keeping these drugs out of the wrong hands and having a safe and environmentally appropriate location to dispose of the drugs is instrumental in stopping the rising problem of prescription drug abuse among our teens.” Mims continued, “Having the overwhelming support and participation of our community shows how effective we can be when we work together toward a common goal.”
Clovis Chief Davis and Clovis Mayor Pro Tem Ashbeck echoed the Sheriff’s sentiments and agreed, “As a community, we are pleased with the results and anticipate even greater results in the future. Hopefully, lives were saved by not having these drugs available and accessible.”
Supervisor Anderson issued a challenge to parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles to: “Go look in your medicine cabinet. There, in the back, is that expired half-filled bottle of pain meds from a few years ago. Do your part and Lock it Up, Clean it Out and Drop it Off.”
