Sports briefs: Clovis West, Woodlake fall in SoCal regional

The Central Section’s final two representatives were knocked out of the CIF State Girls Volleyball Championships on Saturday.

Clovis West (28-13) fell at top-seeded Marymount-Los Angeles 25-18, 25-21, 25-12 in the Southern California Division I semifinals. The Golden Eagles won their state playoff opener 19-25, 25-23, 25-15, 18-25, 15-11 Tuesday over La Salle-Pasadena.

Woodlake traveled to San Juan Capistrano where it faced second-seeded Saddleback Valley Christian, which swept 25-13, 25-16, 25-14. The Tigers opened with a 25-19, 25-21, 25-15 win over Laguna Blanca-Santa Barbara.

The Central Section’s three other state playoff qualifiers — El Diamante in D-II, Hoover in D-III and Minarets in D-V — were eliminated Tuesday.

Rams men to play for Palomar hoops title

Junior Morgan scored 19 points to lead the Fresno City College men’s basketball team past Miramar 59-57 and into the championship game of the Palomar Tournament.

The Rams (6-2) — No. 1 in the state preseason rankings — will face host Palomar for the title at 5 p.m. today in San Marcos.

Palomar beat Los Angeles Harbor 75-62.

Fresno Pacific men fall to D-II power Pomona

NCAA Division II No. 18- ranked Cal Poly Pomona closed the first half on an 8-2 run and didn’t look back, sending the Fresno Pacific men’s basketball team to an 85-65 loss at the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Classic in Belmont.

The Sunbirds (3-3) shot 21% in the second half as the Broncos (4-0) pulled away. Malcolm Griffin led Fresno Pacific with 23 points and 11 rebounds. John Taylor scored 20.

Mitchel Anderson had 19 points, 10 rebounds and six assists for Pomona.

Sunbirds women lose finale at hoops tourney

Fresno Pacific fell behind by 12 in the first half and never recovered in an 81-53 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills to finish 0-2 at the Cal State Los Angeles Thanksgiving Classic women’s basketball tournament.

Charde Stevens led the Sunbirds (0-6) with 17 points. Keairra White added 10 points for Fresno Pacific, which shot 25% (16 of 63) from the field.

Monsters settle for split

Wenatchee pitched a shutout until the 10:52 mark of the third period as the Wild downed the visiting Fresno Monsters 6-1 in the North American Hockey League.

Kyle Buffardi scored Fresno’s goal off assists from Christian Salvato and Trevor Husch as the Monsters fell to 6-12-3 in the West Division.

  • Shilo Vega scored twice and assisted on two goals as the Monsters’ Western States Hockey League team beat Long Beach 10-4 at Gateway Ice Center and improved to 14-0. Luke Rendino also scored twice for Fresno, which outshot Long Beach 50-12.
