Sports roundup: Fresno boxer in quarters at Worlds

Fresno boxer Gary Salazar reached the quarterfinals of the AIBA Youth World Championships (for 17- and 18-year-olds) by registering his third straight win by stoppage in Yerevan, Armenia.

Salazar brought an end to his 123-pound bout against Iraq’s Kamar Aal-Ezirej at the 1:05 mark of the third round.

Salazar moves on to face Russia’s Magomedrashid Dzhabrailov, a former bronze medalist for 15- and 16-year-olds.

Two Fresnans win state Silver Gloves titles

Fresno’s Marc Castro defeated Concord’s Angel Cordon to win the California State Silver Gloves championship for 12-13 year olds in the 85-pound division Sunday. Fresno’s Caroline Riojas won in the female 14-15 106-pound division.

Ex-Clovis West star earns honor

Former Clovis West High star Se’nyce Parrish was named the Big Sky women’s basketball player of the week after the Sacramento State junior came close to the conference’s single game scoring record.

The 5-foot-8 guard scored a career-high 39 points — two shy of tying the Big Sky record — in the Hornets’ 80-71 overtime win over Oregon State on Saturday. Her nine 3-pointers tied the school and conference records.

Bullard alum earns UCLA award

Ian Taubler (Bullard High) earned UCLA’s Ed Kezirian Award, given to the Bruins football program’s freshman who displays the highest level of performance on the field and in the classroom.

The award is named after the Fresno native who played at Central High and Reedley College before moving on to play and coach at UCLA.
